@thementalwallet: Rory Sutherland talks about how trains should stop competing with airlines and how you can be more productive on trains #psychology #perception #business
He's spoken on this before, a great way to innovate is to find what your competition does poorly and compete on that rather than try to compete on what they already do well.

Trains may cost three times as much, but they do take 17 times as long to get there.

I would never go to France, Belgium or the Netherlands on anything other than a EuroStar. You have a lovely evening in London after having got the train there 1st Class. Nice meal out, stay near the station (The Megaro or The Hub depending on budget) Then get the train, chill with WiFi no turbulence, decent coffee, easy movement through the train, keep your belongings above you, get off with your bags and literally arrive in the city centre of Amsterdam or Paris. It’s wonderful. No pissing about. Just go get yourself a beer or a glass of white. Fantastic holiday.

Brightline in Florida does a great job of making this clear. Before you either had to embark on a very unpleasant drive from Miami to Orlando or take a ridiculous flight that was usually delayed. Now you can be productive while getting there in relative comfort

But then how come SNCF in France has deployed both premium (OnOui) and low-cost (OuiGo) high speed rail with great success?

In the northeast I’d take the train more than plane or car if they serviced the route exactly because of this. I didn’t have the airport shenanigans, and I could get so much done personally and professionally than I could in any other mode of transport.

Fast trains are great. But they’re too expensive. For the price of a regular airplane ticket, I could either fly to my destination in a matter of hours or ride to sorta of near my destination in a matter of DAYS. Also, the seats on both planes & trains are uncomfortable & small. Want something more comfortable? Pay more. For the price of a First Class airplane ticket, I MIGHT be able to afford a First Class train ticket. Don’t forget that wifi & food are often an extra expense on both too. If I’m going to pay the same amount, I’m flying.

Exactly. It’s called door-to-door. Basically from my city to another city the flight is 1 hour. By train it’s 4 hours. Door-to-door both come 4 hours and 30 minutes. Might as well take the train.

I liked using trains in Europe because I got there 10 minutes before departure and just got right on

wrong. you have lowcost trains and you have planes companies with wifi and with luxurious food if u want it.
A railway is made to be quick, but for shorter distances than planes.
