you dont have to reinstall windows if you dont want to, if malwarebytes or normal defender dont catch anything then run defender offline. its usually meant to catch viruses that are wayy deep in the software

any malware detection should warrant a full reinstall from usb. competent malware developers hide their software deep into your files. i personally reset at least once a year, just to clear junk and stay safe. also is this renpy like the VN engine or sum else?

You can get hacked using RenPy even without things like installers, since someone can easily inject malicious code into the game. Always run RenPy games through something like Sandboxie if you can, with internet access to it disabled.

wipe the whole ssd, lots of malware will package several payloads, ex: infostealer, crypto miner, keylogger, clipper, RAT, persistence payload. there easily could be undetected malware hiding.

If you pirated a game that is NOT a visual novel, but folder has renpy in it; delete it. Shut down your pc, start it back in safe mode and do a double check. Most "fancier" visual novels also don't use renpy, if you can try to learn what engine the visual novel you wanna get. If it isn't a renpy game but end up with a renpy folder, delete it. Also try to keep your firewall up as much as possible everyone 😮💨 windows defender is actually decent enough as long as you don't do some literal bs. If you end up with something bad enough that defender is ineffective, go for either Malwarebytes (first option) or eset (if Malwarebytes isn't avaliable in your country/area) if a website look too sketchy. It probably is bad tbf 😮💨

you dont need to factory reset even after reinstalling windows malware can still work because some malwares inject them selves in the efi partition, ( the part before windows even launch ) and windows anti virus dont check the efi partition so they can stay there as long as they want but these cases are rare all malwares now are basically all trojan which is the lowest level of malware this procedure works with every malware but for the efi partition thing only certain advanced malware can do it trojans and renpy only steal credentials.

at this point ur info is probably already out there but installing an anti virus like Malwarebytes and then doing a full system scan is smart. even though I'm pretty sure the RenPy malware is just an info stealer not a RAT

Hey Cybersecurity Major here. For one, if you get some sort of malware on your computer, someone somewhere was doing silly goofy things on the internet. Hackers are not going to put too much effort into hacking (in fact, a lot of cyberattacks are automated nowadays), so they will try to trick you into installing malware yourself. If you are downloading anything off of the internet, always scan the file/url before downloading. VirusTotal is a great tool for this (and if you’re not computer savvy, there’s a Reddit dedicated to looking at virus total scans and telling you if it’s malware or not. Rule of thumb is a score higher than 3 is sus). Using ad blockers/element blockers will save you from encountering a good portion of malware. Ublock origin is great (apologies to the chrome users, Google is stanky and likes getting money so you can only get the Lite version of that app, which works pretty well considering everything). Also, UPDATE YOUR COMPUTERS AND APPLICATIONS FOR THE LOVE OF GOD. Stop listening to people about “well this update is (insert OS/application here) bloatware/computer bricking for- 🤓) The majority of OS/Application updates are SECURITY UPDATES. These updates patch security flaws or make a system recognize and deal with newer malware at a faster rate. Lastly, if you do have a virus there is no 100% guarantee that using an anti-malware software completely gets rid of malware. A lot of modern malware uses process highjacking (taking over legitimate processes on your computer and making them do malicious stuff). This can make it hard for antvirus software to track where problems are and delete it because you’re deleting something that should be there theoretically. The only way to be 100% sure you got rid of malware is to burn the system down (a factory reset with the option to delete all data. The option to keep some files gives a chance that one of those kept files was malware). If you are a risky/unsafe internet user (computer literacy of a worm or a sailer of the seven seas), you should totally backup your data in the event you might want to go nuclear. Hope this helps :D
