I feel this analysis has two flaws: a)It considers China to be a country trying to actively spread communism,rather than a competing state to USA, b)that LLMs are necessary emancipatory.LLMs can be useful,but they don't replace hard labor, they mostly affect creative jobs

it's simply that the open source models are intended to attract corporations despite the "china bad" rhetoric. otherwise they have no chance in the western markets. its just self advertising, none of the clients are able to host those models locally except the tiny ones which are *relatively* useless in comparison. it does not go deeper than that. it COULD end up having large implications but the intent is just to market their products while everyone is prejudiced against them

the productivity singularity is a myth invented by the tech elite to convince their investors and the public that their excessive surplus consumption is not only productive but revolutionary (the purchase of advanced micro chips that will have to be completely replaced in less than ten year times is the surplus they extract, an asset that retains it's value like a car you drive daily does. the chips act is instead a panicked reaction to the vulnerability of this supply chain rather than purely a capitalist greed grab; if china were to annex Taiwan, they would lose access to these advanced machines, halting completely the industry), and it sounds like the author of this essay has bought into this lie to support his own ideology. AI only can really replace services or intellectual labor (which the US's economy is primarily based on now), not labor that produces actual material surplus. You don't need to extract surplus from a machine but you can still produce it; if a "productivity singularity" is to be manifested you would need to change your definition of what a machine does because for this to be real machines (via AI) have to become variable capital, which it is not. China's strategy however isn't as single minded as the US's unstable AI bubble; they also heavily invest into robotics which, while not likely to become a "replacement of human labor" (there will almost always be a cheaper organic option for many fields of labor), it can at least greatly supplement it. I agree with Gaos's dialectic examination of the US for the most part, but i don't think this same force can be used "for good" to realize silicon valleys dystopian vision instead for a "utopian" communist version...

From what I've seen of LLMs I'm not sure that they actually can replace a meaningful amount of jobs long-term without a massive dip in quality and reliability. I have no doubt that workers will be fired for LLMs to code or write for them, but I don't think that'll hold for long and if it does, the world will suffer as a result as information becomes even more diluted and programming unreliable.

The funny thing is the german Sofi AI model exists and is as open source as physically possible. Not only do they opensource the weights of the model but also the entirerty (with the exception of works they don't own redistribution roghts to) of the training data.
