Between 1968 and 1973 the entire population was deported to the slums of Mauritius and the Seychelles — and to break anyone who refused to leave, the authorities killed the islanders' dogs and cut off the supply boats. Diego Garcia became a launchpad for B-52s bombing Iraq and Afghanistan, and in 2008 Britain admitted CIA rendition flights had refuelled there. In 2019 the world court ruled the removal illegal. In 2024 Britain agreed to hand the islands back — while keeping the American base for another 99 years. The Chagossians still cannot go home.
