@bookgabber: Yes, I read the review of Nolan's movie by Emily Wilson. And, I read (well, almost finished) her translation of The Odyssey this month and found it to be clear, accessible, and fun to read. I watched Nolan's movie last weekend and thought it was gripping, exciting, and moving. I read Wilson's review of Nolan's movie and I agree with many of her points, disagree with some, and have additional criticisms of my own that she didn't even mention. And my main opinion and takeaway on all of the discourse is.... how fun is this????? As someone who has been pretty into classics for my whole life, I am loving how much of our popular culture is currently lit aflame by a 3000-year-old Greek epic. If you can't get enough of all of this Greek drama (pun intended), I have some recommendations for more media you can dive into! PS this whole video was made to get you guys to watch Plebs. watch Plebs #romehbo #gloriousexploits #troymovie #stanleykubrick #madelinemiller

Just picked up Glorious Exploits! Also want to recommend Mary Beard. She’s a classicist and her Women and Power is so good.

Robert Graves and Mary Renault are considered greats for a reason, but one of my favorite sf takes is Jo Walton's The Just City, which has Athena and Apollo plucking philosophers from across history to attempt to put Plato's Republic into action

Rome on HBO is very good. Kaos was a sleeper but great. Plebs is hilarious.

I loved I, Claudius. The miniseries is really good but the book is fantastic. I’m not sure if you’ve ever read one of the “OG” retellings but one of my favorite books in that genre is Grendel by John Gardner. I know it’s not Ancient Rome or Greek mythology but I found it eye opening when I first read it in high school and it’s quite deep when it comes to reconsidering your initial perceptions.

Watched I, Claudius on Masterpiece Theater, PBS in my early teens. Don’t remember it that well, but do remember liking it. There was a competition scene that I won’t spoil for you that definitely left an impression…
