I’ll never forget in the 90s when my mom saw a Folgers coffee ad that depicted Arabs as being unfamiliar with coffee. She immediately wrote a letter and called their head office, explaining that coffee has Arabic origins. Within one week, she received an apology call from the president, and they pulled the ad.

If it helps, here is another version. That poor shepherd, who noticed the reaction of his goats was called Kalid and the place where the discovery happened is called Keffa, even today. That is where the name comes from. Keffa the place, coffe the been.

The Arabic word qahwah derives from the name of the birthplace of coffee, namely the Kaffa region of Ethiopia. Coffee never meant wine. Sharab (wine) derives from the Arabic root sh-r-b (to drink). Sufis savored wine, which was not permissible in mainstream Islam, and called it coffee (as euphemism) to avoid persecution. The meaning of those two words, however, was very clear. Arabic ethnocentrism attributed the origin of coffee to Yemen, but Arabs were introduced to coffee drink in Ethiopia. If not so, why did they decide to plant it in Yemen? To come up with something afterward!? Over time they added their twist to it. Turks brought coffee from Yemen, which had become Ottoman territory, and spread it to the world as Turkish coffee. Coffee doesn’t grow in today’s Turkey, but they say, “It’s because of the way we make coffee.” They only added their twist to the Arabic coffee. It’s understandable that taste varies in different places. However, the fact remains that coffee originated in Ethiopia.
