@useful_history_tidbits: In the U.S. Army, the unit patch is everything — the 101st Airborne's Screaming Eagle, the 1st Infantry Division's Big Red One, the shoulder sleeve insignia that tells you who a soldier is. Marines wear none of it. No division patch, no unit insignia — just rank, name, USMC, and the Eagle, Globe, and Anchor. But it wasn't always that way. Marines wore unit patches in both World Wars: the Indian-head insignia of the Army's 2nd Division in WWI, and 33 distinct Marine patches in WWII, including the famous 1st Marine Division "Guadalcanal" diamond. In 1946 the Marine Corps banned shoulder patches for good, calling them a custom alien to Marine tradition. The deeper reason reveals two opposite philosophies of building a fighting force: the Army builds loyalty to the unit, the Marine Corps builds loyalty to the whole Corps. Same war, same fight, two different answers — unit identity versus esprit de corps. #marinecorps #usmc #armypatches #unitpatch #militaryhistory #101stairborne #1stmarinedivision #usefulhistorytidbits #marines #army #militaryuniform #espritdecorps

Marines were more about our BLTs, like I was with 1/1, 2/8,3/4, but my home is with 2/4 The Magnificent Bastards!

But Marine patches would be so badass bc they don’t give any fcks what you think. They’d be awesome! Imagine a patch for Belleau Wood “Devil Dogs”
