I was born in Belarus and moved to Canada at 9. I say, it is never ok to "let a language die", because you never are just letting it die. People view language endangerment as a neutral thing, which can be seen in the words and treatment used to discribe it, like "dying" or "endargered", as if it's happening in vacuum. But unless every single person of a specific community is deceased due to a natural cause (like Pompeii), it is never neutral, it isn't "dying", it is being homocided, by colonialism, capitalism, wars or genocides. It isn't "endangered", it is threatened, by governments, corporations, or just hatred, sometimes self-hatred even.

After reading both the book and the New Yorker review I think there’s valid points and criticisms on both sides. However I don’t think anywhere in the review it alleged that there wasn’t much work put into the writing - it just challenged some of the premises of the book. I think it’s a good book and I think it’s a good review

The New Yorker think piece, although had some good argument, kinda stick onto colonialism and capitalism approach (which is so American to be honest). It even compared language to the healthcare system that it has to choose to "save more valuable life". Is it realistic, kinda. Should it be like that, no, right to live is still right. The article don't even sum up how the policy of Kurdish in Turkey and Ukrainian in Russia, which they told are the unnatural linguicide, should be. Instead, they just said Ukrainian and Kurdish are also assimilated other languages before. What a victim blaming mindset. Actually, this think piece is like how US and Israel adjust the g*n*c*de of Palestinians, for greater good of society, what society?
