This actually happened to me. I took 7 weeks of which, only 2 were paid because I burned my 2 weeks of vacation time. I had told my boss the exact day I would be back. When I returned, all my personal items were gone and someone else’s photos were on my desk. Then she came in and it was so awkward. I had found my stuff in a drawer by that time and had replaced everything and was sitting at my desk. She sat in one of the cubicles until the boss got there. Most awkward conversation ever. He said everyone else had told him I wouldn’t be back and that they thought I would stay home with the baby. I told him everyone else didn’t pay my bills and know my financial situation and that he should have asked me if he had doubts. He told me he couldn’t pay two office managers. I told him that wasn’t my problem as I had never resigned and went back to work at my desk. I was there another 6 months before my husband’s job relocated us to another city. Those were 6 weird months. It was a real estate office and his sister was one of the agents. She helped us with the sale of our home and completely waived her commission. I think she was trying to make up for what a bonehead her brother had been. 😂

Actually the employer has no obligation by employment standards for paid leave ( contracts , collective agreement may provide it) but unpaid leave can add up both maternity and parental leave. There is EI though. True for alk of Canada is my understandinf
