The country sought to build a vast empire across East and Southeast Asia, invading places such as China, Korea, the Philippines, Malaya, Burma, and many Pacific islands. Japan fought as one of the three major Axis powers alongside Germany and Italy. The Japanese military was highly disciplined and technologically advanced early in the war, achieving rapid victories after the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941. However, as the war continued, Japan suffered major defeats at battles such as Midway, Guadalcanal, and Leyte Gulf. Allied bombing campaigns devastated Japanese cities, and in August 1945 the United States dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Shortly afterward, the Soviet Union declared war on Japan and invaded Japanese-held territories in Manchuria. Japan surrendered on 2 September 1945, ending World War II.
