@styledbysurvival: It’s amazing how comfortable people are telling mothers how they should comfort and care for their own children. For the record: breastfeeding a 9-month-old is not “too old.” In fact, the World Health Organization and the American Academy of Pediatrics both support continued breastfeeding alongside complementary foods well beyond infancy when it’s mutually desired by mom and child. My body did exactly what it was designed to do then, and it still does what it’s meant to do now. For us, breastfeeding wasn’t just about nutrition—it was comfort, connection, regulation, and security. And if my child needs that before bed or during a hard moment, that’s our choice. The beautiful thing about motherhood is that there isn’t one right way to love your child. I don’t judge moms who formula feed, exclusively pump, combo feed, or choose any other safe way to nourish and comfort their babies. Every family has different needs, and every mom deserves respect. After spending years in a controlling marriage where I was constantly told what I should and shouldn’t do, I can promise you this: no one else gets to decide how I parent or comfort my children. Those days are over. Maybe instead of shaming mothers for doing what nature intended—or for making the best decisions they can for their families—we could normalize supporting one another instead.
