I've been trying to avoid this topic, but it's time. In the past 6 month, six families have reached out to me after purchasing kittens from a breeder located in our area—someone who is pretty popular and ranks high on Google. I'm not going to name names, but hearing their stories makes me sick to my stomach. Please, please be careful when getting a kitten! If the price seems too good to be true, it probably is. A low price often means the breeder has cut corners on things like food quality, vet care, toys, and the overall environment where YOUR kitten grew up. And you are the one who will face the consequences. 1 Do the parents have DNA tests? Ensure the breeder is working to eliminate genetic health issues in the breed. 2!. Does the breeder perform annual echocardiograms on breeding cats? • While DNA testing is a great tool to screen for hereditary conditions, it's NOT ENOUGH to rule out heart disease like HCM (Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy)—a common and potentially fatal condition in cats. A cat can be genetically clear and still develop HCM. The only way to truly assess their heart health is with an echo, performed by a board-certified veterinary cardiologist. 3 What conditions are the kittens kept in? Are they caged, or are they raised in a home environment? 4 Are the kittens vaccinated, microchipped, and dewormed? Does the breeder offer a health guarantee? 5 Is he registered with feline association like TICA/CFA and does he offer a pedigree. 6 Ask for lots of videos of the kittens. Do they look healthy? Request a video of the breeder holding a kitten. Is the kitten social and comfortable being handled? It's ok if kitten is shy. But breeder should notify about it. Kittens should have a shiny coat with no eye or nose discharge before leaving the breeder's home. A Reminder: Veterinary bills in the U.S. are extremely high, so always consider how much you might spend on treating a sick kitten. Don't cut corners when it comes to your new baby's health and well-being.
