I started reading George's inspirations to tide me over and after reading the Memory, Sorrow and Thorn trilogy by Tad Williams, it's impossible not to see those fingerprints all over George's works. in that story, all those visions were being fed to humans by ancient, super developed beings who basically used mortals like livestock for their own hidden agendas. if Lyanna and Rhaegar were being hijacked by intrusive prophecies like in the play, it totally shifts their story from a romance into a kind of puppet show. they aren't acting on free will, they are just pawns being manipulated by an ancient, nonhuman force to breed a specific genetic weapon. in MST, the Norns (which seem to be analogous to the Others) use King Elias to bring back Ineluki the Storm King, sacrificing thousands of human lives in the process.
