Fascism is socially rightwing but economically incomprehensible. That's why it fails so hard.

Mussolini invented it we have seen it. it's when the state says you should serve it instead of the state serving you. that's the core

The last point is the most telling: it’s only really Americans who have a hard time defining fascism. So much of the American expression of democracy has so often been more akin to fascism that to define fascism properly would mean recognising how dreadful politicians like Jackson, Wilson, Nixon and Reagan were

NS and IF are separate ideologies. Mussolini contradicted his own earlier doctrine in certain ways due to German pressure.

Fascism can be described as the bullies stealing all the lunches for their clique. Socialism is the few kids that have a lunch and sharing it. Communism is the class forming a democracy while the teachers stay out of it, deciding who to target first with mob rule, dragging the bullies one by one into the schoolyard and beating the shit out of them as an example, than taking all their stuff. Not entirely definitive, but thats what the american founders feared.

Is there any evidence that Mussolini invaded Abyssinia for racial reasons? Impirial aspiration seem pretty standard for Fascist countries. In this case, Ethiopia had been an Italian colony/protectorate and then lost the Itali-Ethiopian war in the 1800s. It is very atandard for a Fascist regime to use that loss as motivation in Nationalist positions. Your position seems kind of like saying the US fought Japan because they hate Asians. You need a lot if evidence to make that a legit position.

I think part of why the US intellectuals were so hesitant to label fascism so definitivley was also because of how eerily vulnerable our own institutions were (and to a large degree still are) to meeting the conditions of those definitions themselves. In the US a lot of our political scholars like to play a game where any time one of our institutions or politicsl entities starts doing something in a similar vein as the Nazis they whip out a big checklist of ever increasing specifity to point at and go "no, no, see, it doesnt meet every single tiny little factor that Hitler did, therefore its not real fascism!"

I find Trotsky’s definition of fascism incredibly helpful. For those interested in an actual explanation of the class character of fascism I would definitely recommend “Fascism: What it is and How to Fight it”

fascism is inherently unstable, leading to this difficulty to define it imo!! they have a limited number of beliefs to unite them due to their populist nature which naturally creates a lot of friction within the goverment. for example hitler was notoriously not responsible for drafting any legislation, it was merely interpreted from his ramblings further down the chain of command

I would argue that these things are purely semantic. Giovanni Gentile was pretty clear about what fascism was. He felt that through a strong national identity he could solve what he saw as the flaws in Marx's work. At its core fascism was a rejection of capitalism that sought to resolve what Gentile believed were fundamental flaws of communism. Soviet propaganda certainly likes to try and obscure this fact but what we are left with is this messed up political spectrum where the average person sees authoritarian fascism on one side and authoritarian communism on the other side leaving the world of philosophy outside of Marx completely off the table in the minds of most people. such that people haven't the slightest idea what to do with the true liberalism of Locke. Which should terrify us all.

This is the first video I’ve ever seen of yours that didn’t have a substantial oversimplification that enraged me. So thank you for that. Specifically though, fascism is easy to define if you’re being honest. It is socially right wing, economically left but with exclusion of some people or peoples, concerned with nationalism (though the kind is variable), and authoritarian. The problem is right wingers don’t want to associate with the social policy and left-wingers don’t want to associate with the economic policy whether that be because it’s uncomfortable or the fascists aren’t left enough. It’s quite literally called the third position of ideology.

I think that’s because the American government can also be categorized as fascist even while it pretends to be capitalist. Many Americans would prefer fascism to any type of anti-capitalism. And I think a great example of who America was at that time is operation paperclip as well as our weak resolve to hold any of those murderous regimes accountable. Perhaps this debate just holds Water for fascists at a time where fascism is once again on the rise. Some like to say fascism is capitalism in decline. I can’t say I disagree at the moment.
