What if they give you the salary range in the interview process - and when you get the offer it’s the very top of the range?

As a hiring manager I would caution how far you test the waters. If the job states the salary and you ask for 30-40% more than you may have tipped the scale to far because as the hiring manager I would hesitate to give you the job only to know your already looking for a new one to meet your salary expectations.

Hi! I’m based in the UK, and I don’t think this advice translates to every country. Here, salary negotiation is a completely different experience. I’ve had recruiters refuse to put me forward for roles simply because I asked whether there was an extra £3,000 to £5,000 in the budget. The response is almost always, “No, that’s the maximum the employer is willing to pay,” and that’s the end of the conversation. This seems to be a really common experience in the UK. Pretty much all of my friends have experienced the same thing. Negotiating here is incredibly difficult, especially because salaries are already relatively low. The average salary in London is around £40,000, and across the UK it’s around £36,000. Asking for a little more money or even an extra few days of annual leave can sometimes make employers see you as greedy or ungrateful rather than simply negotiating. I even spent some time working in HR, so I’ve seen parts of the process from the employer’s side as well. In my experience, the UK hiring culture is much more rigid than what I often hear from recruiters in the US. There also continues to be a lot of class bias in recruitment, with factors like educational background, including whether someone attended a grammar or private school, still influencing opportunities in some sectors. So while negotiating may be expected in some countries, in the UK it can genuinely cost you the opportunity altogether. It’s a very different recruitment culture.

I’m always confused about how to handle this with internal recruiters. I always negotiate the salary before I hear an offer. So they say we’d love to offer you the position now let’s discuss salary before we write you an offer. Seems like all the advice given on the internet is for after you get an offer. So in my instance it feels less appropriate to negotiate after I receive the offer because I’ve already negotiated before I’ve received the offer. But I always wonder - should I be negotiating twice?

Last role I had I did a great job negotiating my salary. However then I was not able to get any more than cost of living adjustment raises each year as I was at the top of the pay range for my position. Made more money than I otherwise would’ve yes, but not being able to get a merit / performance based raise was a bit demoralizing and I know it did negatively affect my work on a few occasions. Point being there are trade offs not many ppl think of.

I’m interviewing for a more junior role because it’s in the exact market I operated in. The range is lower than I would prefer but if offered would like to negotiate for 25 percent more. Is that too much ? I told them it’s below the salary roles I’m applying for but I made an exception because of the fit/company.
