Ruby Stroud pointed at seven Black men in Lowndes County, Georgia in 1916, and every single one of them was lynched within a week — with no arrest, no trial, and no federal investigation. This is the story that four newspaper sentences tried to bury. One white woman's accusation functioned as judge, jury, and executioner for seven men who had families, land, and futures. The NAACP documented the case and demanded a federal anti-lynching law. Congress refused. Twice. Between 1877 and 1950, over 4,000 racial terror lynchings occurred across the American South — all documented by the Equal Justice Initiative. The same county soil later became the birthplace of the Lowndes County Freedom Organization, the movement that gave the Black Panther Party its symbol. And in 1983, Jean-Michel Basquiat painted the same story onto a New York studio wall when Michael Stewart was choked on a subway platform for writing graffiti.
