Why doesn’t anyone say “it’s lower back day” at the gym? Actually, I haven’t been to a public gym in 6 years… maybe they do now?

If you need a more gentle progression to improve your back pain, comment “Back” and we will send you our free series with massages, stretches, and gentle mobility exercises. For those of you with general, persistent back achiness or tightness, it is probably best that you start strengthening that thang. The lower back is filled with strong muscles that don’t often get the treatment that other muscles get.

How do you safely train the lower back? Slowly and progressively over many months. Start with smaller movements like the superman, then progress it to that full back extension while holding weight.  Injuries can occur anywhere in the body when we progress a load or range of motion faster than our body is ready for, so, be conservative in your progression. “But if my back is tight, why would I shorten the muscles more with strengthening exercises?” That isn’t how the body works. Oftentimes, tightness is neurological. The body detects laxity around joints and creates a passive tension in the muscles to create support. This is a very bare-bones explanation and it’s more nuanced than that. Getting stronger can calm this response down. There are other reasons tightness can occur like a response to post-trauma or scar tissue from injuries/surgery. In general, moving the spine is important, and not just in extension like this video talks about, but also flexion, rotation, and lateral bending.  Again, if you need something much more gentle than this stuff for your situation, comment “Back.” #backpain #lowerback #backmobility #backexercise #hypermobility
