Saying "We are still hunters at heart!", completely ignores our other parts, that lead to technology and stuff. Think about story games, set in magical worlds, it's our drive for wonder. Or what about sandbox/sim games, it's our drive for innovation. OR what about competitive games, and you guessed it! It's our drive for competition and self improvement.
Survival games utilizes our drive for innovation, wonder and self improvement (Or everything else, depending on the game). THIS, is why I think they click so well with us, not because everyone secretly wants to live in a stone world.
Think about it this way: Nowadays, going on a camping trip, isn't truly about reliving the stone age, but for the wonder and self improvement.
You simply can't separate survival from all of the other things that kept us going.
