You definitely have to get to the airport extra early, especially for international flights. Situations like this are exactly why it’s better to give yourself plenty of extra time.

My sister and I booked our flights through American to Portugal where our long haul portion was on Iberia. On our way home we got to the airport and learned that Iberia cancelled our 2 seats and rebooked them. American and Iberia kept sending us back and forth and no one would take responsibility. Finally (after 7 hours at the airport) American flew us to London to get us on a flight home but never reimbursed us for our extra costs (hotel,transportation,food) because they said Iberia is responsible. Iberia never responded to our claims or reimbursed us what was due from the EU code when flights are cancelled. 10/10 don’t recommend!
