Many of you are responding aren't listening to the conversation or are doing the exact thing Isaid we need to unpack. To respond "you're talking about ppl looking a mess" or "why are you talking about white people" because we live in America and we are American and so many aspects of what's acceptable and what we think are wrong with our culture is a by product of white supremacy. I am not campaigning for kids wearing bonnets and durags I stated the opposite in my video more than once actually, but this convo is about white individualism vs black collectivism and how that shows up in our culture and our society due to our history here. really don't like when you don't listen, watch the whole video before commenting or don't try and use some critical thinking about the topic and themes that are being spoken on WITH NUANCE

I think the hardest thing to understand is that as an ethnic minority it isn’t about dressing appropriately to be “white”. It’s about dressing appropriately to be respected by yourself. And to portray confidence.

I love your videos but have to disagree. We're in a world where some of these kids don't know their right from left. In addition, as a culture, we no longer regularly attend church or other forums that require a certain form of dress. We should "polish blackness" not for the white gaze but for our own self respect.

Respectfully, I think you’ve missed the point. The argument of “they do it, so why can’t we?” misses the very heart of the conversation: we aren’t them. Our standards shouldn’t be determined by what everyone else is doing. For me, this isn’t about archaic thinking, policing bodies, or suggesting that someone’s clothing determines their worth. It’s about the standards we choose for ourselves and the way we choose to represent ourselves in spaces that matter to us. We are kings and queens. We come from a people whose excellence, dignity, intellect, and resilience have always been worth protecting. How we carry ourselves(physically, emotionally, and professionally) is one expression of how we honor ourselves. We should be able to have conversations about standards without immediately reducing them to oppression or comparison. Sometimes the answer isn’t “Why can they do it and we can’t?” Sometimes it’s simply: “Because we have decided that this is who we are.”
