@shelbyhallow: Athena and the women of The Odyssey are central to the narrative. ⚔️ An irony I couldn’t ignore given Nolan’s track record with sidelining and poorly writing his female characters...a track record that only SLIGHTLY improves in The Odyssey. #theodyssey #athena #christophernolan

Helen is also the only person to actually apologize in the film and it wasn’t even her fault for real! Odysseus feels shame but he doesn’t say sorry

from what I can see in the patterns of Nolan's work, he's quite accurate in his depiction of women. because if we accept that all his movies are an odyssey (pun intended) into the male psyche, then how many men truly concern themselves with the inner worlds of the women in their lives. isn't it accurate that said women often function as nothing but props in their great adventure? that even if there is some introspection and the man "feels bad", it's not necessarily that he could've done differently, but more of an oops, but oh well. like this was simply inevitable corrateral on his way to greatness.

I kept saying this about Athena!!!!!! But don’t forget that he also tricked the Trojans into accepting the gift of the horse was as an offering to ATHENA.

I love love love this take, but would also argue that since the source material never gives women the real reckoning they deserve, the choice to leave us without it is a wise one. A big swing “happy ending” will never undo the atrocities done to women throughout, and isn’t afforded to us as real victims. The tragedy of war is that it harms women, the poor, and minorities, and they either have to live with the harm or die with it. The point is that the actions of men live on like ghosts, Athena and the people will always remember them. To be an ally and a hero, you have to admit wrongdoing move to the future with better choices.

I feel that his writing and film style is a capsule of the mentality of men during our lifetimes. they see the evil they wrought but have no idea that the little they've done to atone is nearly insignificant to women while they think their contributions are magnificent

he is either unable it's unwilling to give women this depth in his writing, but I think we're at the point where it is a distinction without a difference

To be fair Calypso did that cause she wanted to she took Odysseus and imprisoned him for 7 years it wasn’t until Zeus told her she had to let him go when she finally let go.

I was so mad at his handling of Athena. He showed how she was making the very ACTIVE choice of haunting Odysseus instead of just guiding him, but at the same time gave us a very passive Athena that never actively confronted him. She seemed more like a symbol rather than a character.

Do we think he’s good at writing any characters though? Like I don’t think Oppenheimer nor Odysseus are that complex in his films they just circle complex issues

I absolutely loved this movie, it made me cry. Might be one of my favorite Nolan films, but I’ve heard this take a few times and think it’s a valid one, that he should consider in his future projects. I’ve also heard someone say it was a great film but a bad adaptation, and I think that’s a valid take too.

i think a missed opportunity for the circe scene was to make the men innocent completely. if the men were still finding their way home from war i find it a bit find it a bit ridiculous that they would not be aggressive toward her like at all… if the motif in the writing is that violence and deceit are these men’s nature and that’s why they were made pigs (awesome scene btw) i feel it could’ve been written better to where it’s more sympathetic to her. realistically if you’re that hungry, ready to abandon your leader, men of that caliber who were raping and pillaging in troy would not be kind to a lonely woman on a hill

i agree and id even go as far to say that he lacks the ability to fully deconstruct the "heroes" or protagonists of war bc he reveres them too much

what am I doing here? :
the hill i refuse to not die on: killing the suitors was never a redemption in any version. it has always been there to highlight the themes each author had already developed. but! I do enjoy this take on it

Not at all the point but this is the first time I’ve heard the proper name for the Greek law of hospitality and it completely unlocked the ‘joke’ or humour in Margaret Atwood’s novel, The Robber Bride! 🙏🏽Thank You🙏🏽
