@nabuuma.barista.academy: Milk steaming is one of the most important skills in coffee preparation, and doing it incorrectly can greatly affect the quality of a beverage. When milk is overheated above about 65–70°C, the natural sugars begin to break down, resulting in a burnt taste and an unpleasant smell. Instead of tasting naturally sweet and creamy, the milk becomes flat, bitter, and less enjoyable. Incorrect steaming can also create poor milk texture. Large bubbles produce dry, foamy milk that does not blend well with espresso, while under-aerated milk becomes thin and watery. Properly steamed milk should have smooth, glossy microfoam that creates a silky mouthfeel and enhances the overall drinking experience. Another consequence is poor latte art. Without fine microfoam, it becomes difficult to pour clean hearts, tulips, rosettas, or other designs. The milk will either sink into the espresso or sit heavily on top, making the drink look unprofessional. Wrong steaming techniques can also reduce consistency. Customers expect the same quality every time they order their favorite drink. If milk is steamed differently from one cup to another, the café may lose customer trust and repeat business. Additionally, poor steaming habits waste milk. Overheating or producing excessive foam often means the milk cannot be used, leading to unnecessary costs for the business. This is especially important in busy cafés where milk is one of the highest daily expenses. Hygiene is another concern. If the steam wand is not purged before and after steaming, milk residue can block the wand and encourage bacterial growth, affecting both equipment performance and food safety. Finally, incorrect milk steaming reflects a lack of barista skill and attention to detail. A professional barista understands that every step, from stretching the milk to achieving the correct temperature and texture, contributes to an exceptional coffee experience. Mastering milk steaming improves beverage quality, customer satisfaction, and café efficiency while showcasing the craftsmanship that defines specialty coffee.
