As much as I believe Dr. Fauci has become a political target, I also believe that over more than 50 years of public service he has done a great deal of good for the American people. I understand why his lawyers advised him to invoke the Fifth Amendment. It is a constitutional right, and in some cases a blanket refusal to answer any questions is the safest legal strategy. That said, I think it was a mistake. He's testified before Congress many times over the years and has defended his decisions publicly. Some of today's hearing was obvious political theater, but not all of it. There were also questions that many Americans genuinely wanted answered. Invoking the Fifth to every question, even trivial ones, may have protected him legally, but I think it came at the expense of public trust. Whether he had something to hide or not, many people will interpret complete silence as exactly that. I'm not interested in scoring political points. I'm interested in understanding the truth. Now it's up to people like me to go back through previous hearings and interviews to see whether those questions have already been answered. Most people won't do that. They'll simply remember that he refused to answer. The Fifth Amendment protects your legal rights. It doesn't protect your reputation. In my view, today's strategy may have won the first while hurting the second.
