The USFWS is reviewing its rule regarding where landowners can place drainage pipes within their easement agreement in the Prairie Pothole Region. The current rule to determine drainage tile setbacks requires a science-based examination of each specific location’s soil and slope, and it has CONSERVATION in mind. For more than 60 years, this agreement has protected this region from being drained or degraded because it is a vital location for the US duck population. “It’s the most important geography on the continent for breeding ducks,” says Scott Stephens, senior director of conservation strategy for Ducks Unlimited. It’s duck stamp dollars that have paid for these easements, meaning we’ve already chosen and paid to conserve this land. We want to keep it that way. Please urge the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service to uphold the existing rule that has safeguarded the migratory waterfowl in the US for decades.
