Most urinary tract infections (UTIs) happen when bacteria enter the urinary system, which includes the bladder, urethra, ureters, and kidneys. The most common cause is Escherichia coli (E. coli), a bacterium that normally lives harmlessly in the intestines. However, if it reaches the urinary tract, it can multiply and cause an infection. Less commonly, bacteria such as Klebsiella, Proteus, and Staphylococcus saprophyticus can also cause UTIs. Common signs of a UTI include a burning sensation or pain during urination, needing to urinate more often than usual, passing only small amounts of urine, cloudy or strong-smelling urine, and pain or pressure in the lower abdomen or pelvic area. Some people may also notice blood in their urine. If the infection spreads to the kidneys, symptoms can become more serious. These may include fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, or pain in the back or side below the ribs. A kidney infection needs prompt medical treatment to help prevent complications. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment can usually clear up a UTI and reduce the risk of the infection spreading.
