BTS have done a great thing by condemning the Grammys but let’s not forget it goes deeper than just this. Introducing a “contemporary” country category after Beyoncé won country category, a “Latin” category after Bad Bunny started sweeping awards, adding an “African performance” category after seeing the rise of African music despite there not being one monolith genre that repents African or Latin music is quite disturbing. I’m stuck thinking about when Tyler the Creator won best hip hop album when his album was infact pop, not hip hop, further proving that if you fit the box they have made for you they will put you in it. The argument that the Grammys is an American awards show might’ve stood 10 years ago but now with so many of the recording academy’s voters being from all over the world, and artists from all over topping American charts, the argument falls weak. If it wants to be solely American artists then make it that way, don’t give hope to people who you will ultimately silence and belittle. Also who gives a fuck about the Grammys anyways.. I just care about the principle of what they’re doing here, but at the end of the day it’s a washed awards show that doesn’t really hold much merit anymore.
