Marriage certificates = power. I watched my sister's exhusband used to track her down and do all sorts of moves due to the legal marriage, and even watched my mom threaten my dad about contesting a divorce for years. It always signified "control" to me.

I literally got married at 16 to a 21 yo. He was my legal guardian for two years, essentially, until I turned 18. Wardship can be very literal in today's age, too...I am not even 40. And before anyone asks, yes, we are divorced.

The concept of marriage is not bad. Its the tools and institution thats it was built into that holds the problems. Sometimes we dont separate the actors from the stage blaming it as if that was the issue why the play was terrible. The concept of commitment that is recognized by others isn't problematic. Its how you hold onto that commitment with others and misues it. Sometimes people will sour a good thing and unfortunately

Somehow, this is making me real proud of myself for living as a single parent for 7+ years. So many of us are finding the courage and self-fullness to live for ourselves and our kids, and not by centering men or a relationship with one. I’m real proud of us! Even though divorce is more common, the systems in place still do not make it easy!
