They don’t let libraries copy or scan books bc of copyright, but they don’t let this be held by copyright.

Archivist who specializes in digitization here! You can absolutely digitized books without cutting the spines off. It is done sometimes depending a few factors, but it’s not standard practice. They’re doing it to make the process faster and less labor intensive, and there is no justification for shredding the originals

Meanwhile, as a Librarian, we cannot legally let you photocopy more than 10% of a book because we can be fined thousands for infringement of copyright. I don’t have the words only rage.

Destroying the books is a feature, not a bug. Fewer books means they have to pay AI overlords for the information that was in the books

I'm disgusted. they're destroying the books so that their digital copy is the only copy and now they legally own the only copy.

Copyright is totally cooked. If I can buy a book and scan it into a computer, and that's "transformative", what's the argument preventing me from doing that with a dvd, or a videogame?

As a former used book store owner: you all seem very upset about the destruction of books that society as a whole doesn’t care about whatsoever. No one is speaking about scarce books. But plenty of bookstores buy pallets of used books and straight up throw away most of them. If there’s actually rare books in there, I care. But at the moment this feels like most videos are performative outrage because people don’t understand how the used book industry works.
