when my sister used the word "illegals" several times in a conversation when I tried correcting her to use "undocumented" but she kept using that word, I had to really reconsider how and how much I interacted with her...

It's the psychology of language. it's why teachers are respected more in places that speak Spanish. Master and teacher is the same word. In Japanese, teacher, doctor, and master all share the same title: Sensei. Language can elevate or dehumanize.
