My older sister did this a few times when she was little. Once, while staying overnight at my aunt’s house, she decided she wanted to go home. While everyone was asleep, she walked out and started heading down the highway. Thankfully, a couple found her and brought her home. Another time, she packed a suitcase, announced that she was moving in with Grandpa, and started walking down the road with all her clothes. A doctor once told me that spanking should only ever be considered when a child does something extremely dangerous or potentially life-threatening. In most situations, there are better ways to discipline a child. However, walking away alone is not a minor behavior. He could have been kidnapped, unalived, or seriously harmed. The danger is immediate and very real, and simply taking away toys may not be enough to make him understand how serious it was.
