The most confusing word on a pathology report might not mean what you think. You just got your pathology report that says lobular carcinoma in situ… and all you heard was the word ‘carcinoma.’ This diagnosis is often misunderstood. Lobular carcinoma in situ or LCIS is not invasive breast cancer. It’s a collection of abnormal cells sitting inside the lobules which are the milk-producing glands without spreading. Think of it less as a cancer and more as a marker of increased risk. The name is confusing because of the word ‘carcinoma.’ But LCIS doesn’t behave like typical cancer. It doesn’t form a mass, it usually doesn’t show up on imaging, and it doesn’t spread the way invasive cancer does. However; LCIS does matter. It increases your lifetime risk of developing breast cancer significantly compared to the average woman. And like other high-risk lesions, that risk applies to both breasts. Management usually focuses on risk reduction and surveillance. That can mean closer imaging like annual mammograms plus MRI, lifestyle changes, and sometimes medications to lower risk. In select high-risk cases, surgery may even be discussed but it’s not the default. So LCIS is not a cancer diagnosis but it’s also not something to ignore. It’s a signal to lean in, get informed, and create a plan that fits your risk.
