A Nirvana moment with the Three Days Grace crowd at the Bataclan in Paris At the beginning of every show, you can almost see people thinking, “Oh… they’re really going after a classic. This could be rough.” Trust me, we felt the exact same way. We kept telling ourselves, “This song means so much to so many people. Winning them over is going to be hard.” We also got the occasional gatekeeper comment like, “Why would you play this song when Kurt hated it?” But it’s still Nirvana’s most-listened-to song. You listen to it. I listen to it. Whether Kurt liked playing it or not, or whatever it came to represent about the music industry, doesn’t change what this song became for millions of people. It brought us together. It made so many of us fall in love with rock music. We decided to cover Smells Like Teen Spirit because, for me, it was the gateway into rock. We knew it would get the crowds singing, even when we were opening for other bands. And every single night, it does. By the end of the song, everyone is singing with us, smiling, and sharing the moment. That’s all that ever mattered. Yeah, I could’ve covered Lithium for Kurt.
