Banks are making two primary arguments against the CLARITY Act: 1. Crypto exchanges could offer higher returns than traditional banks. 2. Crypto exchanges are not subject to the same regulations and scrutiny as banks. In this video, we take a closer look at both arguments. We discuss the fact that banks generated roughly $80 billion in quarterly profits, banks can custody stablecoins and other digital assets. We also explore an important distinction between the business models. Many crypto exchanges CUSTODY customer digital assets on a 1:1 basis and generally do NOT lend those assets without the customer’s authorization, while banks operate under a fractional reserve banking system and LOAN out a significant portion of CUSTOMER DEPOSITS. Because customer assets are used differently, it’s reasonable to allow different regulatory frameworks. The concerns raised by the banking industry can be addressed through competition and innovation rather than encouraging policymakers in Washington, D.C., to adopt rules that make it harder for digital asset companies to compete.
