According to Greek mythology, the Greeks had been besieging the city of Troy for ten years without being able to breach its formidable walls. Desperate, they employed a clever ruse devised by Odysseus and built by the master carpenter Epeius. They constructed a gigantic wooden horse and hid a select group of elite warriors-including Odysseus and Menelaus-inside its hollow belly. The rest of the Greek army pretended to give up the siege, packing their ships and sailing away to the nearby island of Tenedos. They left behind a single Greek soldier, Sinon, along with the horse. Sinon convinced the unsuspecting Trojans that the horse was an offering to the goddess Athena meant to secure their own victory. Despite the dire warnings of the seer Laocoon, the Trojans pulled the massive structure into their city and celebrated what they believed was the end of the war. That night, while the city slept, the Greek warriors emerged from the horse, quietly opened the city gates, and signaled the returning Greek fleet.
