I admittedly had a desk full of stuff like this. I ended up tossing every last item into a giant box and was left with a completely empty desk. Then I wiped everything down and I started from scratch. Each item I pulled from the box I determined if it belonged at the desk, another place in the house, or a pile that I started of things that I was going to get rid of. I also had a pile of "I don't know what to do with this / I'm not ready to deal with this" and it took me 3 months to work it out in my head to let go of most of it.
