@cheeringforchange: Every day this week I'm featuring a teacher who could use help clearing their list. Today it's Mrs. M, a 2nd grade teacher in Michigan. Her school is a Title I school, and like most teachers in that spot, she quietly spends her own money on what the budget doesn't cover. We fund schools mostly through local property taxes, which means a kid's zip code decides a lot about what their classroom has. No kid chooses where they're born but right now, it decides more than it should. Her wishlist is in my bio. Or if you'd rather help someone closer to home, there's a full list of 200+ teachers there too! ✨sources✨ https://www.lincolninst.edu/centers-initiatives/efficient-equitable-tax-systems/introduction-property-taxschool-funding-connection/ https://edsource.org/2025/property-tax-driven-education-disparity/742256 https://www.nber.org/papers/w20847

Wait! Did Eloise just discover that parents' income determines the depth and breadth of educational resources available to children? To provide a broader picture, districts in higher income areas receive significantly more private funding (parents and parent-organized fundraisers) than other areas expanding the per student gap. Public education, on the whole, is devalued while simultaneously expected by the public and government.

Thank you Eloise, I'm 60 years old and I never thought about the discrepancy in school funding based on area property taxes. I may be old but I know to appreciate younger people. 💙

The unequal funding also has roots in systemic racism

Keep doing the good work! Education is a right, and no student should ever have to worry about their ability to show up in the classroom or if they'll have the supplies to succeed.

Like my old high school was able to let students know if u need a chrome book to do school during lockdown but some schools on the same county couldn’t like why can’t we just make it so that every school no matter where you live gets the same amount of money like why can’t we do like a version of the minimum wage but for school we like have a federal minimum wage on how much a state can state can spend on school and it’s enough cover all schools supply’s and free school lunch
