Nah, what you hear with them is Blanche Devereaux has a fake Hollywood accent and the guy has a southern Appalachian mountain accent.

I’m from Tidewater region of VA, there are no R’s there. Especially older folks.

Something else I’ve noticed regarding southern accents; It seems like people from North Florida/South Alabama pronounce the word photos or meeting with the T sound. As a Tennessean, I pronounce the T in photos or meeting as a D sound.

Nc here our accents change alot depending on where you are in the state for instance someone from the capital of Raleigh would sound completely different than someone a 30 minute drive away

There is no ONE southern accent. It varies widely by region, even within a state you can have five different accents.

Every state in the south is a different dialect. South Carolina doesn’t sound the same as KY.

This explanation ignores the divide between Scots-Irish and English backcountry settlers and the wealthy English plantation settlers of the 18th and 19th centuries.

Jeff :
Inland Southern accents were more influenced by the rhotic speech of Scots-Irish settlers than coastal Southern which was more Engish settlers.

Interestingly Rue was from Oklahoma, and spoke with an Oklahoma accent, which is closer to the inland Southern shown here. She was doing an upper class Georgia accent for Blanche, but honestly it drifted a little Alabama at times.

Except that’s not right at all. All varieties of English pronounced the R (or better put, were rhotic) during colonization but major sea ports eventually lost the rhotacism in their accents due to contact with the British. The upper class wanted to seem prestigious, so they adopted the feature. Eventually it trickled down to the lower classes and became unfashionable in the upper classes (with the exception of the south, where it stayed fashionable). That’s why the working-class dialects of New York City, Boston, and general dialects of Charleston, Savannah, and New Orleans are non-rhotic.

Sorry to be this person but Blanche’s is totally made up by the actor, Rue McClanahan and the other is a typical, regional Southern Accent that actually exists.
