If the thought of a nasty divorce is already on your mind, I think you already know the answer…

I knew I was marrying the wrong person a month before the wedding. Truly I wasn’t in a good headspace at that time and 6 years later I’m divorced but so much happier.

I thought all of these things, it was my ocd/intrusive thoughts. ive been happily married for 8 years, together for 10 with 3 kids and we are so in love ❤️

As a divorce lawyer, said gently. While it is normal to have jitters, the fact that you're thinking about divorce has me very concerned.

I’m not married but am engaged. As someone with anxiety that can go to rocd in times of distress/during my luteal phase, I’ve learned the important distinction between “what if this persons wrong for me?” (Anxiety) and “this persons wrong for me” (intuition). Just because a thought pops into your head doesn’t make it true. At the end of the day, love and marriage arent just feelings, they’re choices. As hard as it is to hear, you’re the only one who can answer if this is the right choice for you. Someone saying they felt this and got divorced also doesn’t mean that will happen for you. Of course they “knew,” it’s confirmation bias. But someone else saying they felt this and are now happily married doesn’t mean that will happen for you either. You know your relationship better than anyone and you have to determine together what is right. No one can tell you what amount of alone time is normal in your relationship because it’s different for everyone, but in a vacuum, enjoying time with yourself does not inherently mean you aren’t meant to be with your partner. It’s hard to realize outside reassurance doesn’t solve anxiety but once you see that having your relationship in your hands is more freeing than it is scary, you’ll feel more confident.

so I feel like this is a conversation for you and your therapist, not strangers on the Internet. I don't mean that in a nasty or rude way but in a this is a really complex issue that probably has tons of background and reasons why in a state of anxiety your default is to look for reasons things won't work. I don't think having some feelings of pre wedding jitters are definitely a sign that it wot. work but I also think there is at least something to unpack there and a therapist is the person to do that.

So I imagined myself getting divorced before my wedding. And I loved my partner so deeply but I kept feeling that way. We were married for 6 years but did end up divorcing. Sometimes our gut is telling us what our hearts don’t want to.

I don’t think that’s normal. My husband and I DIY’d our whole wedding together, including being up until 2am the night before because the homemade pasta for lasagna got ruined and had to be remade, and there was not a single moment when I didn’t want to be around him or even contemplated divorce.

I’m sorry but I think you already know. For reference I didn’t want to leave his side and was counting down the days until the wedding… kept imagining out future together and felt excited

Don’t do it! It’s way cheaper to postpone/cancel the wedding, than to get divorced. This is not a healthy start/sign

I did this EXACTLY with my 1st marriage…. Notice I said 1st… A failed engagement is better than a divorce for both of you.

As someone with OCD and anxiety I had these thoughts and I convinced myself it was just my OCD. Fast forward it wasn’t my OCD or anxiety….

Hey! Sometimes your mind can start those kind of thought patterns because it’s something so unknown and you don’t know if you guys will be “good” at it. Absolutely soak up some time with yourself because it can be a huge adjustment, especially if you guys aren’t living together yet. I was nervy about my marriage going up in flames and there have been some times that it hasn’t been a walk in the park, but in time you guys will learn how to communicate and take on your new roles better. It’s such uncharted territory and it can be intimidating to jump into. My husband and I very rarely argued before getting married, but once we did, we did have some pointless spats and some deeper conversations about ways that we needed to work on ourselves. If you don’t feel peace about it, then don’t do it, but if you’re just anxious and nervous, lean into it and really feel it because those jitters can turn to so much excitement if you allow them to. ❤️Ultimately there is a plan for your life and that includes a soulmate. You can grow together or scoot before you get to deep in. Either way, it’ll all work out. 💗
