God tells Israel to mark their doorframes with blood, so that when he passes through Egypt, "the destroyer" will not enter their homes. Every firstborn in Egypt dies that night. Every home marked with blood is spared. "The destroyer" isn't his name. It's what he does. Unlike Michael or Gabriel, Scripture never gives this being a proper name — only a title describing his function. Then Second Samuel twenty-four. King David takes a census God never asked for. A plague breaks out. First Chronicles twenty-one records David looking up and seeing an angel standing between heaven and earth, sword drawn, stretched out over Jerusalem, ready to destroy the city. God stops him mid-strike. "Enough. Withdraw your hand." Then Second Kings nineteen. King Sennacherib mocks God in a letter and marches the largest army in the world against Jerusalem. That night, one angel goes out into the Assyrian camp. By morning, a hundred and eighty five thousand soldiers are dead. Three appearances. Centuries apart. Egypt. Jerusalem. The Assyrian camp. Every single time, this being carries out the exact judgment of God — never more than he's told. Scripture never tells us his name. Other passages like 1 Chronicles 21:15, 2 Kings 19:35, and Isaiah 37:36 show the angel executing divine judgment on enemies, while 1 Corinthians 10:10 and Revelation 9:11 further define this figure. Regardless, if it's 3 or 7 or "the angel of the LORD" is on standby.
