Its infamous Runway 13 required a unique visual maneuver known as the Checkerboard Approach. Pilots had to fly directly toward a hill marked with a giant red-and-white grid, then execute a bank-steep 47° turn at a mere 300 feet (90 meters) above the ground. Aircraft skidded right over the rooftops and TV antennas of the densely populated Kowloon City neighborhood, often battling severe crosswinds. With a single runway squeezed between mountains and the harbor, Kai Tak reached full capacity and was finally retired in 1998, replaced by the modern Chek Lap Kok International Airport (VHHH).
