Romania’s winter tourism trades not in glitter but in gravitas, and the mountains answer with a glacial stare. More than half of this serpentine range belongs to Romania, a cold dominion where spruce outnumber people and the wind rules with feral fluency. In the Bucegi Mountains, sphinx-like rocks brood beneath cornices of snow, avalanches rehearsing their distant thunder. Resorts like Poiana Brașov pour mulled wine and polish their pistes, yet a few kilometers beyond the lifts the wilderness resumes its ancient grammar.
