I’m noticing this and I hope this is a safe place to say it despite Deltarune(and Undertale) featuring multiple LGBTQ+ characters, I keep seeing people push the narrative of Kris with Noelle or Kris with Susie while ignoring that Noelle and Susie are both lesbians. On top of that, there’s the constant disrespect toward Kris’s they/them pronouns, which has been an issue in this fandom. Whether it’s intentional or not, refusing to acknowledge a character’s canon identity contributes to erasing the representation the game is presenting. The Snowgrave route especially gets treated as romantic by some people, and I genuinely cannot comprehend that. it’s manipulative, abusive, and tragic. I also think this reflects a broader shipping problem across a lot of fandoms. It feels like some people simply cannot accept that two characters can have a deep, meaningful friendship without it becoming romantic. You see it with characters like Gojo and Geto, Yuji and Megumi, and plenty of others across different series. Close friendships are constantly reinterpreted as romances, as if platonic relationships can’t be just as important or emotionally meaningful. That’s why I find Kris and Susie’s friendship so refreshing. They clearly care about each other and grow closer throughout the story, but that doesn’t automatically make them romantic. Strong friendships deserve to exist without constantly being treated as “evidence” of a future relationship. At the same time, Susie and Noelle have been built up since Chapter 2. Noelle’s crush on Susie isn’t subtle the blushing, awkwardness, nervousness, and admiration are all presented very clearly. Yet I often see people ignore those moments entirely just to pair one of them with Kris instead. Everyone is free to have their headcanons and enjoy fan created ships but it’s important to distinguish those from what the game is actually presenting. Ignoring Kris’s pronouns, Noelle and Susie’s relationship, or treating abusive routes like Snowgrave as romantic doesn’t feel like engaging with the story on its own terms. It feels like replacing the characters with versions that fit a preferred agenda instead of appreciating who they are in game 😭
