Here’s the simple explanation: if no tire, chain pull stump. Chain sideways. Stump no leave ground sideways. With tire: chain pull stump. Tire make chain vertical. Pulls stump up, not sideways. Stump leave ground when pulled up

So basically the chain on top of the tire created a friction effect which combined with the weight capacity of the chain and the gerder spring on the pulley allowed me to not know what I’m even saying

let me explain so you see. the rope is wrapped around the stump and the rope is on the tire and then it rolls and the stump is unstumped. crazy right?

using the tire as leverage allowed the chain to pull up, to the place the stump would have the least resistance, rather than directly to the side, thus increasing the effectiveness of the pull.
