@gigaqian: Anthropic bought millions of physical books for Project Panama, removed their bindings, scanned the pages, and discarded what remained. Destroying the originals did not make AI training legal. It mattered to a separate fair use ruling because each purchased book was replaced by one internal digital copy. The $1.5 billion settlement involved pirated digital books, not these legally purchased print copies. Did copyright law create an incentive to destroy books? #ainews #legalnews #anthropic #books #gigaqian

OK, I’m confused. Are they buying books that only have one copy in existence and then destroying them and keeping it for themselves?

While I agree that it’s an ugly practice, I have issue with your question at the end. Are they public books if they’re purchasing all of them, and if so, what makes it a public book? There are tons of books held in private collections that will likely never be seen by the public. Doing it en masse makes it bad?

Did libraries stop existing? Don’t these books exist in a way to reprint these? I’m not sure what the issue is.

Admittedly, I have not fact-checked this. From what I had heard, it was the acquisition of RARE, one-of-a-kind books that were being destroyed that raised my hackles.

every single claim in this video about ai companies bulk buying and destroying millions of rare antique books is entirely false and fear mongering misinformation. if those books were actually ultra rare or useful they would already be digitized and preserved on archive.org or the library of congress long ago. text datasets like books3 literally had over 190,000 titles scraped off the internet in bulk because half of them are out of print obscure stuff no one has bought in 30 years. people just slap the word rare on forgotten bargain bin books to create fake drama. public libraries literally discard and weed out over 100 million physical books every single year just to clear shelf space and nobody bats an eye, but as soon as an AI company uses digital copies to train a model suddenly everyone starts crying about impending doom for paper 😂😂😂

It’s infuriating that authors have to pay that company for legitimacy with an ISBN and then they SOLD OUT their authors and had the books destroyed! So DISRESPECTFUL!

My problem is people are framing it like they’re destroying millions of books so that everyday people can no longer access them. Which is absurd.

They could have just gotten the pdfs of the old books so yeah it was definitely destroying physical products so you can never know what’s truth
