@monieelyse: Sorry if I seem a bit spicier 🌶️🥵 than my usual self here. I’ve just spent so many years drowning in shame bc of people who have an outlook on ED’s like this. I would continously rip myself apart, knowing I’m hurting the ones I love. When I found out there are genetic and biological factors behind my ED it relieved some of that shame and allowed me to have more compassion towards myself and my recovery journey. Unfortunately, people often assume that because eating involves behavior, the illness must be a choice. The plain truth is, EDs’s are not just “lifestyle changes” and shouldn’t be talked about or treated as such. ED’s are serious psychiatric mental illnesses with biological, psychological, and environmental components. The behaviors are symptoms of the illness, not proof that someone chose it. #recovery #edsheeranrecoveryy #recoveryispossible #recoveryjourney

It's just like a drug addiction being a disease controversy..it may be a "choice" at first. I always compare it to diabetes, for example, maybe that person did not have diabetes... until they chose to eat a bunch of harmful foods and a lot of sugars. Just like a drug addict they chose to do those drugs at first, now they're addicted and now it's a DISEASE. It's also hereditary and does not discriminate!

9/10 times it's also because you feel like you have no control over anything but you CAN control what/how you eat

Such a great response. You started with acknowledging this person’s opinion (however misinformed and ignorant) and followed with researched and documented facts. No defensiveness or anger, just wanting to inform and educate. The more ED’s are understood, the shame and isolation that keeps them thriving will have the opportunity to decrease. ❤️

I had ARFID for 3-4 years & let me tell you.. it is NOT a choice. Any ED is not a choice, Been recovered for almost 2 years & I didn’t choose my ED, but I CHOOSE to recover. I dislike people who are uneducated and don’t do their research 🥲 thank you for talking about this ❤️
