I used to do this, but the thing that killed me was the vast emptiness of walking in LA. Sure, you can do it, but walking 20 mins past a strip mall a McDonald’s and a parking lot was always so boring. If I were to do it again, a Brompton bike would be key.

I'm a travel journalist and wrote an article for The Independent a couple years ago about how to visit SoCal car-free. You have to be choosy about where you live and I imagine Santa Monica isnt cheap!
