The overwhelming majority of Barilla pasta sold in the US is manufactured in Ames, Iowa and Avon, New York using non-Italian wheat. The packaging uses Italian flag colours, Italian heritage imagery, and slogans designed to make you believe you're buying pasta made in Italy. The box says "Made in the U.S.A." in small print. A federal judge ruled the plaintiffs presented enough evidence that they wouldn't have purchased Barilla if they knew it wasn't made in Italy. But it's not just where it's made — it's what's in it. Italian law defines dried pasta as two ingredients only: durum wheat semolina and water. No additives. No preservatives. No synthetic vitamins. Barilla's US ingredient list includes enriched semolina — flour stripped of its bran and germ during milling, then fortified with synthetic niacin, iron, thiamin mononitrate, riboflavin, and folic acid. These synthetic additives would make the product illegal to sell as pasta under Italian law. Same brand. Same name. The Italian version has two ingredients. The American version has a paragraph.
