@offtrailpaige: i’m officially ned, it’s a really exciting and wonderful thing that i couldn’t picture a year ago. i think there’s a side of transitioning from treatment to surveillance that is really difficult on cancer patients. it’s so easy to assume one should just be happy to be tumor free but there’s a lot of emotion that comes along with it. let me know if you struggled through this transition too #coloncancer #cancer #survivor #health
Survivorship is so messy and weird and complicated, far from the sigh of relief that everyone expects! It seems like you’re doing a great job of unpacking that and just taking things one step at a time, hopefully each step gets easier and easier!!

I don’t know if the surgeon will let you but I was given my port and for about a year used it as a keychain. I 💯 relate to what you are saying. It’s really normal to be feeling what you are experiencing ❤️🩹

Survivorship is so weird. People don’t understand it unless they’ve lived it.

I got my port out last November after stage 3 treatment. I loved getting my port out but the past bunch of months has been really weird. Stretches of living it up interspersed with the quarterly scanxiety. Watching cancer friends pass away. Watching cancer friends recur or have scares. Still attending post cancer support groups. Texting on “colon baddies” text chains. Missing out on some things because of dumb post-surgery BS with my revised digestive system. I find as time passes I think about it less but I know I’m not out of the woods yet. I’m thinking of you and please be gentle with yourself as all of this is so hard.

As an outsider you did such a good job living your life despite cancer while you were going through treatment. I think there's something about the port removal that physically signifies "you are safe" and all the unprocessed emotions from this whirlwind feel safe to come up and be felt. I could be 100% wrong but I've seen this with my friends and it makes total sense to me. Sometimes this chapter is the hardest to move through because you feel more alone and aren't sure what's next unlike when you're going through chemo

How long after treatment did you get it removed? I’m scared to get mine out.

Unfortunately my brain refuses to know the difference between getting a port flush and getting accessed for chemo even two years later. I’ve got too much medical PTSD for it to be anything but a trigger for me. My only fear in having it removed is the same as bringing an umbrella so it never rains — I’m so afraid if I get it out the cancer will come back

You’re allowed to feel all of these feelings. Be easy on yourself and keep doing the things you have learned to fall in love with since your diagnosis! 🧡🫶🏼

You’re right. It’s another part of the healing but you do make a good point with it.

It is a strange feeling! I felt the same way! During chemo, you are actively fighting. Afterwards, it’s all on you and your body. You are going to rock your new adventure and exciting new path!

I felt this way too; got mine out three weeks ago, and now I have phantom feelings of it being there. It’s ok to have mixed emotions about it. Wishing you so much luck and healing
