Their marriage could have created a bridge between the Green and Black factions before their rivalry became impossible to repair. Instead of Helaena being Aegon’s wife and Jace being Rhaenyra’s heir, they could have represented the union of both branches of the Targaryen family. It also could have changed the relationship between their families. Helaena is not someone who seems naturally drawn to political conflict, while Jace repeatedly shows that he understands the importance of diplomacy and alliances. If they had grown closer, their marriage might have made it much harder for Alicent and Rhaenyra to see each other’s children as enemies. Jace and Helaena could have become the living connection between the Blacks and Greens. Of course, their marriage wouldn’t automatically solve the succession crisis, because Aegon’s claim would still exist. But if Viserys had supported the match and used it to formally unite the two branches, the Dance might never have happened in the same way.
