I hear this all the time. “Copper doesn’t work.” Or, “I tried it and it didn’t do anything.” The interesting thing is, copper absolutely does work. The science behind it is well understood. As copper sits in water, it slowly releases tiny amounts of copper ions. Those ions interfere with essential processes inside algae and many microorganisms, damaging their cell membranes and disrupting enzymes and genetic material that they need to grow and reproduce. In simple terms, copper makes it much harder for them to multiply. Where I think people get disappointed is that they expect copper to replace cleaning. It can’t. Birds bring in dirt, feathers, pollen, droppings, seeds, and organic debris every single day. Wind adds dust and leaves. Copper isn’t going to remove any of that. Think of copper as something that slows biological growth, not something that keeps a bird bath clean. That’s why I still dump, rinse, and refill my bird baths every day, and give them a proper scrub regularly. Fresh water is always the priority. The copper disc is simply another tool that helps between cleanings. It’s not that copper doesn’t work. It’s that sometimes we’re asking it to do a job it was never designed to do. A healthy bird bath isn’t one product. It’s fresh water, regular maintenance, and a few simple tools all working together.
